Temple legend from Siva Puranam, Vishnu Puranam etc states that Druing Treta yuga, Ravana Bramha promised to his mother for bringing Atma Lingam and install in Lanka City.
Once Ravans mother praying to Saikatha linga on seashore, A big wave crashed on the beach and spoiled her prayers. Enraged Ravana promised his mother to bring Atma Linga of Lord Shiva to pray in Lanka. Ravana meditated and evenplayed Rudra Veena with his intestines for Lord Darshan. He even uprooted the Kailasa parvata and bear on his head. Shiva moved by ravans prayers and granted him his own Atma Linga He instructed Ravana to carry the Shiva Lingam in his own hands & not to place on land till he reach Lanka. Lord Vishnu intervened with shiva after ravana left and he said ravan will become invincible once he installed Shival Lingam in his place.
Ganesha with Narada formed a plan to halt ravana and in disguise as a gopalaka, stopped ravana. Narada Rishi asked ravana to offer the Sandhya vandanam as it is sunset time & Ravana gave the atmalingam to Gopalaka to carry it till he returns. Gaesha told Ravana that he will call three times if he felt uneasy and ravana must return to him. Ganesha quickly called three times Ravanas name & placed the Atmalinga on earth. The Linga was permanently attached to the current peetam and Ravana with his immense strength cannot lift the Lingam. The strength shown by shivalingam earned the name as Mahabaleswara Linga.

Hinduism considers a departed soul from earth will be called as Pitru Devathas. For a person who suffers with the Dosha of his ancestors his life is miserable. without the blessings of ancestors not one ritual or pooja will give the benefit.
