Guwahati kamakhya Temple History & Legend:
In Hindu Mythology Shiva & Parvati are considered as Adhi Dampatulu. Parvati in her before life was Sati devi daughter of Daksha Prajapati. Sati Devi immolated her self in Daksha Yagna because of the Insult by Daksha. Parameswara infuriated at the loss of Sati Devi created Veera Bhadra from his Hair and ordered him to stop DakshaYagna.
Shiva devastated with Sati’s lifeless Body carried her on his shoulder and drowned into eternal grief. Maha Vishnu to protect the universe from Shivas grief, divided Sati Devis body into 18 pieces with his Sudarshana Chakra. The body parts fell over 18 divine places in India and the Sati Devi Yoni part fell on Neelachal Mountain @ Kamakhya at present day Guwahati in Assam state.
The Temple at Kamakhya was originally built by Rati devi wife of God Manmadha. Shiva burnt Manmadha with his trinetra because Manmadha shot his mystic love arrows on Shiva during his grief. Rati devi prayed shiva for her husband and shiva resurrected Manmadha in his previous form and powers. So the couple constructed the supreme center of creation at Kamakhya Yoni Peetam of Sati devi.
