Aurangabad Grishneshwar Mahadev Darshan Temple is the last of 12 Dwadasa Jyotirlingas in India. Sri Grishneshwar Temple Importance, History & Legend:

The temple sthala Purana mentions Lord Shiva pleased by the virtuous worship by Sudharma and his wife manifested here as Grishneshwar Mahadev. Sudharma married the youger sister of his first wife sudeha. Her name is Gushma & She is an advent devotee of Lord shiva. She daily worshipped 108 Matruka Lingams or Shivalinga made of earth. Sudharma’s first wife envious of her sister drowned her son in a pond. Grushna did not notice this henious act deeply worshipping Lord Shiva. After she came to realize and called her sons name, He was saved by Lord Shiva and appeared infront of her. Grushna asked shiva to forive her elder sister and stay on the present day temple place permanently to protect people. The place was thus called Grushneshwar.

During the muslim raids on Indian temples after delhi sultanate, ancient temple was looted and destroyed. Shivaji Maharajs grand father with help of people reconstructed the current temple in 16th Century and installed Sri Grushnehwar Mahadev. The temple complex is in Maratha style with high rising platforms and Garba griha was marvellous with granite made sculptures. People used to visit druing Karthik Maas, Shiv Ratri days and Maha Shiva Ratri days for festival celebrations.

How to Reach Sri Grishneshwar Mandir from Shirdi, Pune, Aurangabad?

MSRTC (Maharastra State Road Transport Corporation) offers daily shuttle services by Bus to Grishneshwar from Pune, Nashik, Aurangabad & Shirdi Bus depot. Generally many people visit Grishneshwar from Shirdi as a part of their Aurangabad Darshan. Many private travel operators usually offer per head packages from Shirdi. Each ticket may cost 450 rs to 1000 rupees based on vehicle.
